Yomiko: I didn’t want to do it, Walter! If there had been any other way…! But there wasn’t. And the books understood that.

They told me they weren’t afraid. They were willing to be martyrs! For me! It would have been safer to sneak away, but I had to honor their sacrifice, had to…

I stayed!

Walter: Shh…there, there…

Yomiko: I listened while they died!

Well, I give up. I now ship Walter/Yomiko.

You know, even as I was drawing this, I was thinking, “Darnit, I’m getting het in my yuri.”

But it makes an eerie kind of sense. If great power brings great responsibility, then Yomiko has way too much responsibility for one human to deal with. And she (unlike, say, Integra) doesn’t have the temperament for it. She’ll take on the burden out of necessity, but it’s very hard on her to always be the strong one.

Walter, meanwhile, is a grizzled old veteran. He’s a lot like Donnie – incredibly tough and battle-hardened under a Zen exterior. (And Donnie was definitely old before his time.) He’s someone Yomiko can lean on – which is something she desperately needs right now.

…and I should probably stop here, before I talk myself into writing the pairing into strip canon XD

I think my fanish devotion to Walter just went up another notch.

Poor Yomiko 😥 It was very brave and noble of her to stay and witness her “friends'” sacrifice, but that is still something nobody should ever have to go through.

Well I don’t know about this ‘Yomiko/Walter’ shipping. I think Walter was acting more like a father figure, trying to comfort an obviously-distraught Yomiko.

Oh BTW, my typing right now has a… slight impediment. I stupidly cut both my right thumb and right middle finger on a can lid (teaches me for using the wrong tool for the job). Had to get both lacerations glued (certainly beats stitches anyday) and as a result, I’ve got bulky bandages on the thumb and finger. 🙁

Poor Yomiko. I cry manly tears. 😥

I feel ya, man. I fee… wait a second, those tears aren’t manly at all! See, look at that one right there. It’s got a little bow on.

(spoilers in this post!)

I’m still a bit confused by the whole “books are alive” thing, as it really clashes with the OVA and the TV series – if destroying books is murder, Anita is a one person genocide in the library vs Junior, and none of the paper masters seem to hold the books as precious as life – even Yomiko uses the only extant copy of her book to escape from the I-Jin’s rocket, which I doubt she would have done if it was screaming at her lots. Maggie doesn’t hesitate to sacrifice Bram Stoker’s Dracula book to save Nenenenene either…

Also, wasn’t the fire an accident in the TV series? As I remember it, it looked like Yomiko went slightly crazy after seeing
what Joker did to her mentor (Donnie?)
and the fire was a side effect…
Of course, killing a whole load of people ALSO would have that effect.

Eee-yep, Yomiko needs medication (If I was a genre-blind psychologist, I’d say she’s schizophrenic. But since I’m not: anti-depressants.)

Winged Knight on Wed Jan 14, 2009 11:33 am

BOWS CAN BE MANLY! *Continues crying manly tears*

Urahara on Wed Jan 14, 2009 1:12 pm

This beats any manly sacrifice I’ve ever seen anywhere, if only because the books knew the only thing they could do at all for Yomiko was die.

I may hate seeing books in any kind of situation where they could be harmed, but damn, that’s definitely one of the worst things a person could ever experience.
