There still isn’t a Season 2 for the original anime, but eight months after this was posted, it was officially announced that they were making an OVA.
Email 1: When’s the second season of Hellsing coming out?
Email 2: So I heard they’re working on a second season of Helping. Anybody know the details?
Erin: This question has been asked so many times, in so many ways, that most educated Hellsing fans are sick of hearing it.
Email 3: Will there ever be a second season of Helping?
Email 4: Guess what! There’s going to be a second season of Helping! It’s called…
Erin: So listen closely: any rumors you’ve heard about a second season of the Hellsing anime are false.
Here’s what does exist: one thirteen-episode anime series by Gonzo Animation, released in English by Pioneer on four DVDs. It stunned everyone by being wildly popular. For instance, Pioneer expected to sell 7,000 copies of the first DVD in America… they sold 40,000. And that was just in the first two weeks.
There’s one feature (on the first DVD) that has caused confusion: the short trailer/music video called Psalm of the Darkness. It features this shot of the Major, as well as other elements from the manga that were changed for the anime or simply left out. It’s cool, but not a preview for season 2.
Here’s what does not exist: a second season of Helping, or any plans to make one. The next question is: why not? After all, it was a hit. Between the DVDs and the merchandise, it’s made Pioneer and Gonzo plenty of money. Gonzo president Muramaha-san has even said that the studio would like to make more.
And the answer is: because Kohta Hirano said so. Specifically, he said no more anime till he finishes the manga. And it’s showing no sign of stopping any time soon.
[And after the anime inserted Incognito to create a climax mid-story, can you blame him?]
